Common Treatments for Anxiety
Most people living with anxiety are first offered standard treatments such as:
- SSRIs and SNRIs: Which can take 6–8 weeks to show benefit and don’t work for everyone.
- Benzodiazepines: Which may help in the short term but carry a risk of dependence if used long term.
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT): And other forms of talk therapy – which can help retrain thinking patterns but may not address the root cause of the anxiety.
For many, these treatments are effective. Others may also find practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or lifestyle changes helpful in easing anxiety. But for some, the benefits of these approaches may not last, or the side effects of medication outweigh the relief.
