Iron Infusions in Toronto and the GTA

Fast Access to Safe and Effective IV Iron Therapy in Toronto

No Referral Needed

Low iron can affect almost every part of your day. You may feel exhausted even after a full night’s sleep, get winded more easily than usual, struggle to concentrate, or notice symptoms such as headaches, restless legs or increased hair shedding. For many people, oral iron is the first step. But sometimes it’s not enough. Your iron levels may stay low despite taking supplements, or side effects such as constipation, nausea and stomach discomfort can make them difficult to continue.

That’s where an iron infusion can help.

Ketamind Health provides iron infusions for people from Toronto and across the GTA at our physician-supervised medical clinic in Markham. IV iron bypasses the digestive system and delivers iron directly into the bloodstream, making it possible to replace a much larger amount of iron at one time. We use Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose), an IV iron treatment that can provide a large replacement dose in a single appointment. Most people need just one infusion.
We’ve also made it easier to get started.

If you already have recent bloodwork showing iron deficiency and a prescription for IV iron, you can book your infusion with us. If you don’t have bloodwork or a prescription, you don’t need to go back to your family doctor first. Book a virtual or in-person consultation with our clinical team. We can arrange the bloodwork you need and, if IV iron is appropriate, provide the prescription and book your treatment.

Your infusion is administered by a registered nurse in your own private treatment room at our CPSO-accredited Level 2 medical facility, with physician supervision and monitoring throughout your care.

Signs of Low Iron

Iron deficiency affects how your body produces red blood cells and delivers oxygen to your tissues. Canadian Health Measures Survey data indicates that 18% of women aged 19 to 50 and 21% of girls aged 14 to 18 are deficient in iron. The symptoms are easy to dismiss because they can look like many other conditions.

  • Ongoing fatigue that sleep doesn’t fix
  • Noticeable hair shedding or thinning
  • Getting winded doing things that shouldn’t be tiring
  • Trouble focusing or persistent brain fog
  • Feeling cold when others are comfortable
  • Pale skin, brittle nails, or an urge to move your legs at rest
  • Frequent headaches

What Restoring Your Iron Levels Can Do

  • Noticeably more energy within days to a few weeks as your body increases hemoglobin production
  • Better stamina during exercise and daily activity
  • Improved concentration and mental clarity
  • Reduced or resolved hair shedding, with new growth following over months
  • Less restlessness in the legs, particularly at night
  • Improved mood and a general sense of feeling like yourself again

Why IV Iron Infusions Can Work When Oral Iron is Ineffective

Oral iron supplements work well for mild deficiency in people who can absorb and tolerate them. But they have limitations. The digestive tract can only absorb a fraction of what’s in a tablet, and for many people they cause nausea, constipation, or cramping that makes consistent use difficult.

A 2017 randomized trial in The Lancet Haematology found cumulative fractional iron absorption of about 16% with consecutive-day supplementation in iron-depleted women. A more recent review in Haematologica describes typical absorption from oral iron supplements as approximately 10% to 20%.

IV iron bypasses that absorption step. It goes directly into the bloodstream at a therapeutic dose, which allows iron stores to be replenished without relying on gastrointestinal absorption. For people with confirmed deficiency who haven’t responded to supplements, can’t tolerate them, or need their iron levels restored more efficiently, IV therapy may be appropriate.

IV iron therapy can be appropriate if:

  • You’ve been taking oral iron consistently and your levels still haven’t improved
  • Supplements cause nausea, constipation, or other side effects you can’t manage
  • Your ferritin or hemoglobin isn’t coming up despite adequate iron intake
  • Your symptoms are affecting your ability to function day to day
  • Your iron requirements are higher than usual due to pregnancy, heavy periods, or a chronic health condition

Two Simple Pathways to Get Started

Path 1: You already have bloodwork

If you have recent lab results confirming iron deficiency, you can book your infusion without the need for another blood test.

Path 2: You don’t have bloodwork or a prescription

If you don’t have a family doctor or recent lab results, our clinical team offers consultations to review your symptoms and history. If appropriate, we can order the bloodwork requisition and provide a prescription for IV iron. This allows you to move forward with an iron infusion without waiting for your physician.

Either way, our team will guide you through whichever option fits your situation.

Physician-Supervised Care in a CPSO-Accredited Clinic

Ketamind Health is accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario as an Out-of-Hospital Premises. Our clinic is equipped and staffed for medically supervised IV treatment, with registered nursing care, physician oversight, monitoring protocols and emergency equipment available.

Iron infusions are a safe and well-established treatment, but they do carry a small risk of hypersensitivity reaction. In the FERWON clinical trial program, serious or severe hypersensitivity reactions occurred in 0.3% of patients treated with ferric derisomaltose. That’s why you remain with us for monitoring after your infusion.

Our team has extensive experience administering IV treatments. Every iron infusion is administered by a registered nurse in a private treatment room, with physician oversight.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iron Infusions

No referral is needed. If you have recent bloodwork showing iron deficiency, you can book directly. If you don’t, book a consultation with our team and we’ll help arrange what’s needed.

About an hour. Monoferric infuses over roughly 20 to 30 minutes, followed by a 30-minute monitoring period before you leave. Your care team will confirm the timing when you book.

Some people notice improvement in energy within a few days. For others it takes two to four weeks as the body builds new red blood cells. Most people see meaningful improvement in fatigue, focus, and stamina within a month of treatment.

Most people need only one. Monoferric can deliver up to 1,500 mg in a single visit, so a full replacement dose can often fit into one appointment instead of the several smaller doses older formulations may require. Whether you need a second infusion depends on your dose requirements and follow-up bloodwork.

IV iron is a well-established treatment used widely in clinical practice. Serious reactions are uncommon. In a study of 3,050 people, serious or severe hypersensitivity reactions occurred in 0.3% of those given ferric derisomaltose, or roughly 3 in 1,000. That’s why you stay with us for 30 minutes of monitoring after your infusion instead of leaving right away.

The iron medication is often covered under extended health benefits or provincial drug programs depending on your eligibility. The infusion administration fee isn’t OHIP covered but may be eligible for reimbursement through a Health Spending Account. We recommend confirming your coverage before your appointment.

There isn’t one ferritin or hemoglobin number that determines whether everyone needs an iron infusion. Your bloodwork needs to be considered alongside your symptoms, medical history, the cause of the iron deficiency and whether oral iron has worked or can be tolerated. Your clinician at Ketamind Health will review these factors during a consultation before recommending IV iron.
