Migraine Infusions in Toronto & the GTA

Advanced Relief for Severe Migraines

When a migraine is severe, lasts longer than usual, or does not improve with your usual treatment, IV migraine infusions may be an option. At Ketamind Health, we provide medically supervised migraine infusions at our Markham clinic for patients from Toronto and across the GTA.

We offer two types of migraine infusion treatment.

  • Acute Migraine Infusions. For appropriate patients with an active, severe or prolonged migraine that has not responded adequately to their usual treatment. Treatment is individualized to address the symptoms you are experiencing.
  • Preventive Migraine Infusions. Scheduled IV treatment for eligible patients who need migraine prevention, including VYEPTI (eptinezumab) when prescribed.

What Is a Migraine Infusion?

A migraine infusion is medication delivered intravenously in a medically supervised setting. For an active migraine, IV treatment may be considered when symptoms are significant and your usual treatment has not provided adequate relief. Because treatment is delivered intravenously, it may also be useful when nausea or vomiting makes oral medication difficult to take. For migraine prevention, prescribed medication can be administered by IV on a scheduled basis.

When to Consider an Acute Migraine Infusion

  • Acute IV treatment may be considered if you have an established migraine and:
  • Your usual migraine medication has not provided enough symptom improvement
  • The migraine is lasting longer than usual
  • Pain remains moderate to severe
  • Nausea or vomiting makes oral medication difficult
  • Symptoms are significantly interfering with normal activities
  • The migraine has become prolonged or difficult to manage
  • Whether treatment is appropriate depends on your symptoms, medical history and clinical assessment.

What Is Included in an Acute Migraine Infusion?

  • Your treatment is determined after clinical assessment and may address:
  • Migraine pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Inflammation
  • Recurrence of symptoms
  • Dehydration when present
  • Other symptoms relevant to your migraine
  • The specific treatment depends on your symptoms, medical history, current medications, treatments you have already tried, allergies, contraindications and previous response to treatment.
  • This is why we do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Your IV migraine treatment is selected for your clinical presentation.

A Private Setting Designed for IV Treatment

Migraine commonly involves sensitivity to light and sound. Receiving treatment in a busy clinical environment can make an already difficult migraine more uncomfortable. At Ketamind Health, infusions are provided in individual private treatment rooms where patients can rest while remaining under medical supervision. Our Markham facility is designed for medically supervised IV treatment and patient monitoring. Learn more about Ketamind Health and our clinic or meet our clinical care team.

Preventive Migraine Infusions

Acute treatment manages a migraine that is already happening. Preventive treatment has a different goal, which is to reduce future migraines. For eligible patients, scheduled IV medication may form part of a migraine-prevention plan.

VYEPTI Infusions for Migraine Prevention

VYEPTI (eptinezumab) is a prescription medication administered intravenously for migraine prevention.

It targets calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), a molecule involved in migraine. Unlike an acute migraine infusion, VYEPTI is administered on a scheduled basis to help prevent future attacks.

Health Canada lists VYEPTI as a marketed prescription medication administered intravenously in Canada.

Depending on the individual patient, treatment options may include preventive therapies, nerve blocks, injection-based treatments and other approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions About Migraine Infusions

A migraine infusion is medication delivered intravenously in a medically supervised setting. It may be used for an active migraine when clinically appropriate or, with different medication, as scheduled preventive treatment.

IV treatment may be considered when an established migraine is severe or prolonged, your usual treatment has not provided adequate relief, or nausea and vomiting make oral medication difficult. A clinical assessment is required to determine whether outpatient treatment is appropriate.

There is no single migraine infusion used for every patient. Treatment is selected according to your symptoms, medical history, current medications, treatments already tried and clinical assessment.

An acute migraine infusion may be an option for an established migraine that has become prolonged or has not responded adequately to your usual treatment. Contact the clinic so the team can determine the appropriate next step.

Because IV medication does not need to be swallowed, it may be useful when migraine-related nausea or vomiting makes oral medication difficult to take or retain. Your overall treatment is based on clinical assessment.

Treatment time varies according to the medication prescribed and the monitoring required. Our team can provide a more specific timeframe once your treatment pathway is known.

An acute migraine infusion is intended to treat an active migraine in an appropriate patient. VYEPTI is a scheduled preventive treatment intended to help prevent future migraine attacks.

Yes. VYEPTI (eptinezumab) is administered intravenously, but it is a preventive migraine treatment rather than treatment for an active migraine attack.

The requirements depend on the type of treatment you need. Contact our team and let us know whether you have an active migraine, are seeking preventive treatment, or already have a prescription or treatment recommendation. We can explain the appropriate intake process.
